Senior R&D Engineer, XRF Science

In this role you will help organize and contribute to the research and development efforts of the Tribogenics XRF engineering team, advancing and supporting the Watson XRF product line and upcoming XRF products. The Watson XRF is an integrated hardware-software and cloud-connected test and measurement instrument. This is an opportunity to learn and train with our world-class XRF science leaders, and help Tribogenics transform the XRF industry.

Tribogenics is commercializing innovative new X-ray technology, creating the equivalent of the transistor for the X-ray market. This technology enables Tribogenics to create the world’s smallest and most affordable X-ray sources for dozens of industrial, security, and consumer applications in the $20B X-ray industry.

Tribogenics was founded in 2011 and currently employs talented scientists, engineers, and sales and marketing staff at a world-class facility in Los Angeles, CA. The company recently closed financing led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund.

Job Summary

As a start-up, we each work across all aspects of the system, and seek leaders at all levels to help deliver results that have the greatest customer impact. This is a hands-on role (70-80%), and a significant opportunity to lead and influence the growth of our company.

  • Design and perform experiments in XRF spectroscopy
  • Build and debug a prototype XRF measurement system from component level
  • Review, process, analyze and interpret XRF measurement data
  • Collaborate with system engineering, product management, production, and support customer sales/issues
  • Provide technical leadership to technical and non-technical individuals


  • 3+ years experiences in XRF spectroscopy, XRF measurement systems
  • Understanding of X-ray physics, mechanism of X-ray generation, detection, and interaction with matter
  • Demonstrable in-depth understanding of XRF spectroscopy including but not limited to X-ray solid-state detectors, front-end analog electronics, digital pulse processing, multi-channel analyzer, noise reduction, EMI, pulse pile-up, etc.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design and industrial metrology is a plus
  • Programming in 1 or more of the following languages/tools/platforms is a plus: C++, Java, Python, Labview, Matlab, VB, Android, MS Windows
  • Excellent organization and communication skills
  • Curious and hungry to make a real difference
